Charles Spurgeon’s One Prayer

Charles Spurgeon’s One Prayer

I have now concentrated all my prayers into one, and that one prayer is this, that I may die to self, and live wholly to him.

DL Moody was a good preacher but a greater pray-er – RA Torrey

Out of a very intimate acquaintance with D.L. Moody, I wish to testify that he was a far greater pray-er than he was preacher. Time and time again, he was confronted by obstacles that seemed insurmountable, but he always knew the way to overcome all difficulties. He knew the way to bring to pass anything that needed to be brought to pass. He knew and believed in the deepest depths of his soul that nothing was too hard for the Lord, and that prayer could do anything that God could do.

The Prayer Life of Hudson Taylor – DE Hoste

I should like to allude to a few points in the character of Mr. Hudson Taylor which impressed me personally, and which I think had something to do with the blessing that God granted to his efforts on behalf of this country (China). First his prayerfulness; he was of necessity a busy man, but he always regarded prayer itself as in reality the most needful and important part of the work.

Single Eye for God’s Glory – Elisabeth Elliot

[Amy Carmichael’s] great longing was to have a “single eye” for the glory of God. Whatever might blur the vision God had give her of His work, whatever could distract or deceive or tempt other to seek anything but the Lord Jesus Himself she tried to eliminate.

Prayer in Busyness – Charles Spurgeon

I like that saying of Martin Luther, when he says, “I have so much business to do today, that I shall not be able to get through it with less than three hours’ prayer.” Now, most people would say, “I have so much business to do today, that I have only three minutes for prayer; I cannot afford the time.” But Luther thought that the more he had to do, the more he must pray, or else he could not get through it. That is a blessed kind of logic: may we understand it! “Praying and provender hinder no man’s journey.” If we have to stop and pray, it is no more hindrance than when the rider has to stop at the farrier’s to have his horse’s shoe fastened; for if he went on without attending to that it may be that ere long he would come to a stop of a far more serious kind.

Today’s Evangelism – Paul Washer

Several years ago … I remember coming across a book by Ernie Reisinger called “Today’s Evangelism” and I began to read it … I got halfway through that book and this is no exaggeration … This is true. I fell out of that chair with such the fear of God upon my life, and I pressed my face into those old boards of that room in the city of Lima … I pressed my face as far into those boards as they could get in fear … and cried out to God, “God, If you promise not to kill me for the way I’ve preached your gospel, I promise from here on out I’ll never preach it that way again.

Crying for the Filling of the Holy Spirit – DL Moody

I was crying all the time that God would fill me with His Spirit. Well, one day, in the city of New York — oh, what a day! — I cannot describe it, I seldom refer to it; it is almost too sacred an experience to name. Paul had an experience of which he never spoke for fourteen years. I can only say that God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand. I went to preaching again. The sermons were not different; I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted. I would not now be placed back where I was before that blessed experience if you should give me all the world — it would be as the small dust of the balance.
