Holiness

As we grow in holiness, we grow in hatred of sin; and God, being infinitely holy, has an infinite hatred of sin

Every Christian who seeks to advance in holiness should remember this: there may be intense consecration and fervent zeal, and if the Lord himself does not step in, there may be unconscious self-exalation. Let us learn the lesson that the greatest holiness comes in the deepest humility.

An ineffably holy God, who has the utmost abhorrence of sin, was never invented by any of Adam’s descendents.

Think not to say within yourself, “No one can know what his heart is. We must hope the best. No one can find out with any certainty the state of his own soul.” Beware, I say again — beware of such thoughts. The thing can be known. The thing can be found out. Deal honestly and fairly with yourself. Set up a ‘trial’ on the state of your inward man. Summon a jury. Let the Bible preside as judge. Bring up the witnesses. Inquire what your tastes are — where your affections are placed — where your treasure is — what you hate most — what you love most — what pleases you most — what grieves you most. Inquire into all those points impartially, and mark what the answers are. “Where your treasure is there will your heart be also.” (Matt. 6:21) A tree may always be known by its fruit, and a true Christian may always be discovered by their habits, tastes, and affections. Yes! you may soon find out what your heart is, if you are honest, sincere, and impartial.

God has always sought a humble people. He can use no other . . . There is always much need of heart preperation, in humility and separation, before God can consistently come. The depth of any revival will be determined exactly by the spirit of repentance that is obtained. In fact, this is key to every true revival born of God.

Two things will get you to leap out of yourselves into the promises of God today. One is purity, and the other is FAITH, which is kindled more and more BY PURITY.

The more holy a man becomes, the more conscious he is of unholiness.

Unholiness in a preacher’s life will either stop his mouth from reproving, or the people’s ears from receiving.

God’s holiness and His nature are not two things, they are but one. God’s holiness is His nature, and God’s nature is His holiness.
