My dear brethren, do not try to make [the gospel] tasteful to carnal minds. Hide not the offense of the cross, lest you make it of none effect. The angles and corners of the gospel are its strength: to pare them off is to deprive it of power. Toning down is not the increase of strength, but the death of it … Learn, then, that if you take Christ out of Christianity, Christianity is dead.

He [the Father] could not be more pleased with Him [Christ] than He is and there could not be anything in Christ that would be more pleasing to the Father than what there already is in Christ. … What the great Father’s mind is, none of us can know, for the finite cannot measure the Infinite. We have no standard that can apply to Him, but we are sure that it must need an Infinite Objective of delight to satisfy the Infinite mind of the Father—and Christ fully satisfies it.

[Jesus was] the gathering up of all the loveliness of which only the Infinite mind of God could conceive.

What is the Church? The word signifies an assembly; the Church of Jesus Christ is an assembly of faithful men, the whole company of God’s Chosen, His called out ones, the entire community of true followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. Wherever true Believers are, there is a part of the Church; wherever such men are not, whatever organization may be in existence, there is no Church of Jesus Christ. The Church is no corporation of priests, or confederacy of unconverted men—it is the assembly of those whose names are written in Heaven; any assembly of faithful men is a Church.

If sinners be dammed, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one GO there UNWARNED and UNPRAYED for.

In our esteem, the joys of earth are little better than husks for swine compared with Jesus the heavenly Manna; I would rather have one mouthful of Christ’s Love, and a sip of His fellowship than a whole world full of carnal delights! What is the chaff to the wheat? What is the sparkling paste to the true diamond? What is a dream to the glorious reality? What is time’s mirth in its best trim compared to our Lord Jesus in His most despised estate? If you know anything of the inner life, you will, all of you, confess that our highest, purest, and most enduring joys must be the fruit of the Tree of Life which is in the midst of the Paradise of God! No spring yields such sweet water as that Well of God which was dug with the soldier’s spear.

If you will not hear God, you cannot expect Him to hear you! And if you will not do what He bids you, neither can you expect Him to give you what you seek at His hands. An obedient heart is necessary if there is to be any happy conversation between God and the soul!

He who would glorify his God must set his account upon meeting with many trials. No man can be illustrious before the Lord unless his conflicts be many. If then, yours be a much-tried path, rejoice in it, because you will the better show forth the all-sufficient grace of God. As for his failing you, never dream of it-hate the thought. The God who has been sufficient until now, should be trusted to the end.
